With the overwhelming emotions of The Joy Formidable's debut EP A Balloon Called Moaning having barely sunk in, the North Wales-turned-Brixton trio return with the perplexing, vociferously visceral Popinjay. Edgy, urgent and unnervingly poppish, with accompanying kitsch artistic direction, the lead single from their longed-for LP proper suggests a fair deal more than success on the horizon... If Courtney Love can't resurrect the true Hole, perhaps Ritzy Bryan's Joy Formidable can fill such a vaguely significant gap...
Popinjay is to be released as a strictly limited 7" on April 5th. If sales of the live EP were anything to go by, it'll disappear in an instant. Far from coxcombs, quite how these divine darlings are still bereft of major label endorsement is a modern wonder in itself.
