Harvieu Heartbreak, Through The Night.

What with Adele offending all and sundry having bemoaned her situation within the top tax bracket (you can't have your cake and eat it too, Miss Adkins), Duffy done for and Eliza Doolittle dropping off even the Fearne Cotton "WOWWW" scale, Britain could benefit from a bona fide songstrel to belt away to come drivetime. Obviously it'd be best to have one that the Twitterati, bloggers et al. can universally laud, or at least unashamedly plug, and Salford's Ren Harvieu may just turn out to tick all aforementioned boxes when her swoonsome debut single Through The Night emerges July 4th on Kid Gloves/Island. Not that it sounds a whole load like West End Girls, but it's probably the most polished, accomplished first foray into potentially impending chart supremacy since the Pet Shop Boys' initial statement of intent all those moons, birds and monsters (or at least monstrous singles) ago. Carol King pizazz, melodramatic crescendos (quite possibly due to Ed Harcourt's involvement in its conception), horn sections, gospel choirs'n'all, expect her Saturday afternoon slot on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury next month to prove an induction into future Harvieu hysteria...

Then there's the somewhat disconcerting Glasvegas "duet" of Roy Orbison's Cryin' in a rather nondescript dressing room in Harvieu's hometown. Make of this one what you will, although rest assured you'll be left stupefied once again by her quite impeccable vocals...
