Following in Björk's dainty footsteps and contributing heavily to an app is estranged Super Furry Animal, Gruff Rhys, who's recorded a vulnerable little ditty by the name of Whale Trail to accompany a game of the very same name. The game features Willow the Whale, whose objective is to gulp down as many bubbles as feasibly possible while evading the clutches of the somewhat inconspicuously entitled Baron van Barry in a world dripping in the colours of Kirby, conjured by SFA visual collaborator Neil McFarland. While Willow is left to "simmer in the wintertime", to "collide through the clouds", the track sounds like much of Gruff's sublime Hotel Shampoo LP were it submerged twenty thousand leagues under the sea, while maintaining a pace as racy as a final lap of F-Zero X. Trashy synths, myriad time signature shifts, and an embedded diplomatic message of "just tax the rich and give to causes that will cause the pain to cease" render Whale Trail a work as ingenuous as its El Perro Del Mar-featuring flipside, Space Dust #2. A limited edition 12", out October 31st, can be acquired here, with the arrival of Whale Trail preceding it on all fully functional touchscreen Apple devices on October 20th. 03 Whale Trail by PIAS Entertainment
