On the Horizon: Nite Jewel. 4 Real.

By God does Los Angelina Nite Jewel subscribe to Prince's instruction to "party like it's 1999 / Yeah, yeah, hey" and while the turn of the millennium may not be pop's most resplendent era in recent memory (any period practically defined by Sweet Female Attitude's Flowers isn't ever going to prove all that strong), the likes of Am I Real? and What Did He Say sound eerily transcendent of era, capable of redefining a moment that's over a decade out of date. Indeed, in the case of Am I Real? Leanne Brown and Catherine Cassidy's sparse garage vibe is reconstituted and paired with sultry deadpan vox reminiscent of those exhaled by Yukimi Nagano of Swede electro sweets Little Dragon.

Laced with lounge schmooze, What Did He Say meanwhile conjures images of an early morning spent with Kleer booming out from L'Hospitalet in the wake of AnotherLateNight at Sónar. If you were afforded the luxury of living like one of the innumerable bumbling cretins of Made In Chelsea, you'd blare this from your gleaming seafaring vessel as you gassed into the most ostentatious port Southern France has to offer the exceedingly rich and tragically famous.

However the highlight of Nite Jewel's Soundcloud selection thus far is the swanky She's Always Watching You. Calling up remembrances of The Writing's On The Wall-era Destiny's Child were it reimagined by Shanks & Bigfoot, DB Boulevard, or any other time-expired dance pop act you care to mention from any point during the past ten years, it's a superb example of minimal pop destined for deserted Shoreditch dancefloors, then the frenzied store floors of Topshop etc.

Another weekend and another London-staged 'micro festival' to add to Binnacle this way comes in the inimitable shape of Nail The Cross. The Saturday night of its fourth edition is topped by Nite Jewel herself. More info, tickets, etc. here.
