Why Suuns are the Most Important Band of 2011.

It's that time of year when lists clog up the wireless web and quivering wrecks tremble into office appraisals. Thus having provided a highlight of a certain festival we've harped on about incessantly ever since it came to a dramatic close with Panda Bear and with Zeroes QC a staple of our Records of 2011 rundown, we examine just how and why Suuns became the MIB ('Most Important Band') of the year...

When someone mentioned the band Suuns to you in 2010, there was probably only a minimal chance you’d heard of them. But now, as we find ourselves at the tail end of 2011, I find it hard to believe you haven’t. And here’s why.

Having formed in 2009 under the moniker Zeroes, 2010 saw them up their game: their thrilling debut Zeroes QC was released in the US and Canada, although it took them until earlier this year to set foot on European soils. Throughout 2011 I saw them live four times, the last time being at Le Guess Who? back in late November. And let me tell you, there ain't no band I’ve seen grow so profoundly over the course of a couple of months. I’ll be honest, Suuns probably won’t blow me away as much these days as when I first caught them live although they still manage to get me psyched for their live show like no other band can.
All four members of Suuns are the embodiment of humbleness too: when I interviewed them at the start of February they said the fundamental rule they had as a band was to check your expectations at the door, to not expect much and always give it your all. And that’s precisely what they do, unfailingly, every single time, continually coaxing new people into adoration of their amazing abilities.

In between touring throughout (pretty much) the entirety of 2011, they also managed to record two new songs that explicitly illustrate that they’re still pushing themselves. The video for Red Song, aptly, catches you off guard just as their live shows do.

After their show at Le Guess Who? (that packed out the biggest venue of the festival, Utrecht's Tivoli Oudegracht) I bumped into Liam, Suuns' drummer. I was still vibing off how awesome they’d been and told him how amazed I was seeing all those people get so rabidly into it. Liam’s response? “Try being me sometime!” Enough said.
